A teen’s Twitter plea for free Wendy’s nuggets has beaten Ellen Degeneres’s star-studded Oscars selfie to become the most retweeted tweet of all time – as he is rewarded with free ‘nuggs’ for a year.

Carter Wilkinson’s quest for retweets began last month when he asked the fast food chain, ‘Yo @Wendy’s how many retweets for a year of free chicken nuggets?’

Wendy’s, known for their sassy comebacks on social media, replied with a Herculean challenge: ’18 million.’

‘Consider it done,’ the undaunted high school student had replied.

He then tweeted the conversation with Wendy’s with the caption: ‘HELP ME PLEASE. A MAN NEEDS HIS NUGGS.’

That plea for nuggs has since been retweeted more than 3.5 million times – setting a new world record.

Today, despite Carter not quite hitting the 18 million mark, Wendy’s have rewarded the Nevada teen with free nuggets for an entire year.

‘@carterjwm is now the most retweeted tweet of all-time,’ the chain tweeted, alongside a picture of Carter in a #nuggsforCarter t-shirt holding a handful of Wendy’s gift cards, and a certificate.

‘That’s good for the nuggets, and $100k to @DTFA. Consider it done. #nuggsforcarter.’

‘We did it guys!’ the 16-year-old wrote on Twitter. ‘Now let’s get to 18 mil!’

DeGeneres had called in Bradley Cooper in an effort to protect her retweet record last month as she saw her challenger’s numbers rising, before offering to give the teen ‘a year’s supply of Ellen underwear and this 55-inch TCL Roku TV’ if she could ride his coattails to 18 million

Today, Carter tweeted at the TV show host, to apologize for beating her record and asking if he could still keep his TV and underwear

Carter’s certificate read: ‘This certificate certifies that Carter Wilkinson has the most retweeted tweets in the history of ever (sorry Ellen) #nuggsforcarter #consideritdone.’

The news will come as a blow to former record holder Ellen DeGeneres.

The 59-year-old talk show host had attempted to cling onto her retweet crown when she noticed Carter threatening to eclipse her 3.4 million for her famous selfie from the 2014 Oscars, featuring A-listers such as Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong’o (and her brother Peter Nyong’o), Channing Tatum, Meryl Streep and Kevin Spacey.

DeGeneres teamed up with Bradley Cooper last month to address her record’s danger, joking, ‘This kid is on my heels, Carter, stop it, right now! I worked so hard to set that record.’

She even presented somewhat of a compromise with a mutually beneficial deal that could get the teen his nuggets while keeping the record under her Twitter handle.

‘I challenge anyone who retweets Carter’s tweet to also retweet my Oscars selfie. That way I retain my title and he can reach his goal,’ she said before offering to give the teen ‘a year’s supply of Ellen underwear and this 55-inch TCL Roku TV’ if she could ride his coattails to 18 million.

But Carter took the challenge in stride, writing: ‘GAME ON,’ adding that the fast food chain had pledged to donate $100,000 to the Dave Thomas Foundation, an adoption charity named after the eatery’s late founder, if Carter outpaced Ellen.

United even offered to fly Carter to any Wendy’s around the world if he hit 18 million while Hunt promised to take him for ice cream.

And on Tuesday, the teen surpassed the TV host and Wendy’s has made good on their part of the deal, donating the $100,000 to the charity, as well as rewarding Carter with his well-earned nuggs.

‘We could not be more excited for Carter for having broken the record of the most Retweeted Tweet of all time. We love Twitter because it lets us talk with people in real and fun ways, and they have been loving us back as a result.’ Kurt Kane Chief Concept and Marketing Officer, The Wendy’s Company.

However, before you rush to start their own #nuggs campaign, Wendy’s has some bad news for you.

‘We’ve learned our lessons on making those deals.’

Meanwhile Carter has no plans to stop his campaign, pledging to try and get to 18 million.
