Ant announced he was checking into rehab in June – having become addicted to painkillers and depressed, following a botched knee operation and inability to start a family.

Now speaking out for the first time about his battle, the Geordie admitted he is ‘very sorry’ for the strain his demons have put on his wife Lisa, who has staunchly supported him over the last few years.

He admitted to the newspaper: ‘I’ve put Lisa through hell with mood swings and depression and how it affects you.

‘I’m very sorry about the effect it has on partners. This kind of stuff puts strains on any marriage.’

With the couple’s inability to conceive a contributing factor to his depression, Ant went on to admit the pair had ‘struggled’ in their marriage over the last few years – but that Lisa has been helping him every step of the way.

He continued of his wife: ‘All I can say at the moment is that she’s been amazing — fantastic throughout.’

The pair married back in 2006, after becoming engaged while on holiday to Dubai the previous year.

The couple had been together for eleven years prior to their nuptials, having met on the Smash Hits tour in 1994 – with Ant performing alongside Dec as PJ and Duncan, and Lisa in pop band Deuce.

The make-up artist has openly stood by her husband during his rehab stint, as the first to thank fans for their support following the announcement in June.

Taking to the duo’s Twitter account the day after the news broke, Lisa wrote in an emotional statement: ‘Completely overwhelmed by all your love & support ,it means so much.

‘I’m relieved he’s receiving the help he needs, we just need him better.’

The pair have only been in contact via telephone during his rehab stint, but are set to reunite when Ant is discharged – expected in the next month.

A source close to Ant told the Sunday Mirror last week: ‘He is doing really well. It has been a tough few weeks but he is coming through it and is now over the worst of it. Ant has been very brave and is totally committed to his recovery.

‘Lisa is desperate to see Ant and she is expected to visit him shortly. Dec will be also seeing him soon. It’s bound to be emotional but Ant knows that Dec will be there for him every step of the way.’

Ant first confirmed he was checking into rehab to battle depression and his dependence of prescription drugs two months ago.

He has been battling his condition for two years after an operation on his knee went wrong in 2014, leaving him in constant pain.

Following his knee operation, he began taking the opioid painkiller Tramadol and became addicted.

In the same interview, Ant revealed he had come close to death at the worst of his condition, which saw him rushed to hospital after a drugs and booze binge, which caused him to hallucinate, at 5am.

However for the first time in three years he is now clean of all drugs, and has lost a stone since being admitted into rehab in June.
